Communiqué RFLD Human Rights and Civic Space

Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) conducted a Regional Capacity Building Activities on Human Rights and Civic Space to increase the capacity of CSOs to engage with African Union mechanisms. RFLD is firmly committed to promoting human rights and media freedom.

The training will update, familiarize, and equip civil society groups, bloggers, and journalists through advocacy (submission of public statements before the African Commission and ACERWC Sessions and formal submissions to the Conference of State Parties of the Kampala Convention), submission of complaints, litigation or the use of special mechanisms to address particular human rights violations. 

The specific goals of the activities are to : (1) Increasing women’s rights and youth activists, HRDs and journalists knowledge of the operations of the African Commission to enhance their ability to demand protection and promotion of their rights at national level; (2) Supporting organizations and individuals in their countries to take up cases before the African Commission and link with other groups working on litigation before the African Court; (3) Understanding the operations of the African Union, its human rights mechanisms, and to understand the relevance of developments at these mechanisms for national human rights regimes and the public.

The activities to be conducted are:

(1) Training Workshop for civil society organizations on understanding AU human rights system and mechanisms;

(2) Training Workshop with media actors to understand application of regional instruments;

(3) Interactive Webinar on Human Rights Dialogue (Guest : Hon. Rémy Ngoy Lumbu, ACHPR Vice-President, Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders and Focal Point on reprisals in Africa).
