Press Release: RFLD and CIVICUS Regional Activity on Civic Space Restrictions

The Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) in partnership with CIVICUS is organizing a Regional Consultation on Civic Space Restrictions from May 20 to 22. This Consultation is funded by CIVICUS.
Advocacy for the Opening of Civic Space has become a full-time battle for the Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) and its partner CIVICUS, as it is an integral part of their line of intervention. This consultation on civic restrictions will take into account countries in the sub-region such as Benin, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger and Guinea.

Participants include human rights defenders, influencers, activists and journalists working to defend human rights and respect civic space.

The keynote speaker is Hon. Rémy Ngoy Lumbu, Vice President of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR). He is also the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders and Focal Point on Reprisals in Africa.

The two partner organizations, CIVICUS and RFLD, have been working since the dawn of time on key themes, including civic space. With a view to intensifying their actions in this area, both organizations have agreed to extend this discipline to other countries in the sub-region.

At the end of this consultation, the organizations in the countries concerned will be in a position to :

  • Ensure the implementation and sustainability of the recommendations adopted during the consultation at grassroots level.
  • Call on state authorities to reduce repression and violence against human rights organizations, civic movements and activist groups.
  • Improve the security of civic space by strengthening legislation and engaging governments in the protection of freedom of association and assembly.
