CEMIRIDE, CIVICUS, and Le Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) with support from Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) and Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse (VSF- Suisse will organize a Side Event on Climate Change and Land Rights, during the forthcoming review of kenya by the Africa Commission on Human and Peoples Rights, based on the report that Kenya has submitted.
The side event provides a good platform for CSOs to interrogate and interact with the Kenyan government report, to understand more the African States position on Climate Change and Land Rights, explore further commitments and strategies on the advocacy opportunities following the review. The outcome of the side event will form the basis of developing a more concrete programme around strengthening the African climate change civic space among the CSOs, especially indigenous communities.
The Main Objective of the side event will thus be: to provide a platform for African CSOs to interrogate African States Human Rights commitments in the African Charter, as well as other instruments, with regards to indigenous communities, based on the reports submitted to the ACHPR.
The specific objectives of the side event will be:
- Provide a critical analysis regarding climate change and land rights issues in relation to indigenous peoples
- Unpack the challenges faced by indigenous communities and activists working in the climate change and land rights space, and elaborate opportunities for advocacy
- Interrogate Africa state’s commitments to implementing African Commission Decisions, including the African Decision and the Ogiek African Court Ruling Strategy.
The event will be planned for a maximum of 2 hours, with a maximum of expert panelists (Government of Kenya, African Commission, Indigenous Communities, and CSO).
Simultaneous Translation in French, English, Arabic and Portuguese will be available.
