ANCB mobilizes to develop Benin’s gender equality strategy

PRESS RELEASE

As part of the promotion and protection of women’s rights at local and central level, the Association Nationale des Communes du Bénin (ANCB) is organizing a stakeholder consultation workshop through the Municipal Partnerships for Innovation – Women in Local Politics (PMI-FPL).

The consultation is being held at the Hotel GANNA in Grand Popo this Tuesday, August 24, 2021. This consultation is the result of a partnership with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) to improve the quality of life of women and girls especially those from marginalized groups.

At the invitation of ANCB, Madame AGUEH Dossi Sekonnou Gloria, President of the Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD), is taking part in this stakeholder consultation.

Recall that Law 2019-40 of November 07, 2019, revising Law 90-32 of December 11, 1990 on the Constitution of the Republic of Benin in Article 26 provides that “men and women are equal in law. However, the law may lay down special provisions to improve women’s representation of the people”. Article 145 of Benin’s new electoral code stipulates that each political party wishing to take part in the elections must present a list comprising “a number of candidates equal to the number of seats to be filled, including one woman and her deputy specially presented as reserved seats”.

Current advances in gender promotion in Benin

  1. Creation of the National Institute for the Advancement of Women (INPF).
  2. Passage of laws on the political participation of men and women in the electoral process.
  3. Charter of ethics for men and women in politics in Benin: Improving the representative balance between men and women on electoral lists.
