The Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement – Women Leaders Network for Development (RFLD) is proud to organize and fund a critical Regional Advocacy Roundtable on December 13, 2025 bringing together representatives, leaders, regional experts, and international consultants to address the unprecedented political crises facing West Africa.
In partnership with the ACHPR Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, this high-level multilateral dialogue will address the ongoing crisis within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), the recent coup in Guinea-Bissau, and how these political events are affecting African nationals, civil spaces, and democratic governance throughout the sub-region.
CRITICAL ISSUES TO ADDRESS
The meeting will tackle three interconnected regional challenges:
- Alliance of Sahel States (AES) Crisis: Analyzing the implications of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger’s withdrawal from ECOWAS on regional integration, security cooperation, and economic solidarity.
- Guinea-Bissau Coup d’État: Examining the recent constitutional crisis, its root causes, immediate security impacts, and pathways toward democratic restoration and accountability.
- Impact on African Nationals & Civic Spaces: Assessing the devastating effects of political instability on vulnerable populations, particularly women, youth, and human rights defenders, including displacement, violence, and shrinking democratic freedoms.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
· Conduct comprehensive analysis of current political crises and their regional security implications
· Engage ECOWAS representatives in strategic dialogue on effective crisis response mechanisms
· Advocate for robust protection measures for vulnerable populations affected by political instability
· Develop joint advocacy strategies and actionable plans with clear implementation timelines
· Strengthen institutional partnerships between RFLD, ECOWAS, and regional stakeholders
· Document gendered impacts of political crises and ensure women’s voices shape peace processes
