Standing Together: Celebrating International Women Human Rights Defenders Day

9th Edition | 29 November 2025

Dear Champions of Justice and Human Rights,

Today, we stand in solidarity with Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) across the globe—courageous women who risk everything to fight for human rights, gender equality, and social justice. On this 9th edition of International WHRDs Day, we honor their resilience, amplify their voices, and commit to protecting those who protect our freedoms.

Why WHRDs Day Matters

Women Human Rights Defenders are on the frontlines of change. They challenge oppressive systems, advocate for the marginalized, and create pathways to justice. Yet, they face unique and intensified risks—targeted not only for their activism but also for their gender identity. They endure threats of violence, online harassment, judicial persecution, and systemic exclusion, often extending to their families.

This day acknowledges their vital contributions and shines a spotlight on the specific dangers they confront simply for standing up for what is right.

The Reality in Sub-Saharan Africa: Urgent Statistics

Violence & Threats:

  • 76% of WHRDs report receiving threats of physical violence
  • 83% have experienced online attacks and digital harassment
  • 42% have faced judicial harassment
  • 91% report that threats extend to their families
  • WHRDs working on LGBTQ+ rights face 3.6 times higher risk
