Dear Human Rights Defenders and Civil Society Partners,
We are excited to announce that the Regional Training on Early Warning in Africa is currently underway in Accra, Ghana. The RFLD Team, alongside our partners Hivos, EU SEE (European Union Supporting Engagement with Civil Society), WACSI (West Africa Civil Society Institute), and The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS), is organizing this critical two-day workshop on November 14-15 2025.
PARTICIPANTS FROM ACROSS AFRICA GATHER IN ACCRA
We are pleased to welcome participants from various African countries to Accra for this significant regional event. The training involves around 30 key stakeholders, including Human Rights Defenders, representatives from the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), organizations developing early warning systems, civil society advocacy groups, representatives from regional and sub-regional mechanisms, as well as academic and research institutions.
HONORED TO HOST OUR DISTINGUISHED GUEST SPEAKER
We are privileged to have Hon. Rémy Ngoy Lumbu, ACHPR Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders and Focal Point on Reprisals in Africa, as our featured guest speaker. His expertise and leadership in human rights protection across the continent is inspiring our participants and enriching the training experience.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW
This comprehensive training workshop is designed to enhance collaboration between civil society organizations, Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) in the field of early warning systems. The training responds to the ACHPR’s request to strategically position Human Rights Defenders to effectively utilize early warning data and advocate for improved human rights conditions across Africa.
Participants are actively engaging in interactive and participatory sessions, including case study analysis, group exercises, role-playing scenarios, multimedia presentations, and practitioner testimonies from representatives from civil society in Africa, human rights defenders, and EU SEE network members.
TRAINING OBJECTIVES IN ACTION
Throughout the sessions, participants are:
• Gaining a comprehensive understanding of early warning systems architecture and their relevance to the protection of human rights and civil society
• Learning to identify and analyze human rights risk indicators effectively
• Developing practical skills in data collection and analysis
• Discovering how to translate early warnings into effective advocacy strategies
• Creating actionable plans for their organizational contexts

The specific objectives are being realized through:
• Streamlining the actions of organizations producing early warning information and ensuring synergies for effective responses
• Exploring evidence-based advocacy strategies that leverage early warning data to influence policy and practice
• Strengthening the voice and participation of HRDs in continental human rights governance structures
• Building technical capacity in early warning data analysis and interpretation
• Developing collaborative frameworks for information sharing and coordinated responses
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to human rights protection in Africa.
Best regards,
RFLD Team
In collaboration with Hivos, EU SEE, WACSI, and WADEMOS
