Climate Change in Subsaharan Africa - RFLD

Climate Change and Women in Subsaharan Africa

RFLD is committed to addressing the disproportionate impacts of climate change on women in Subsaharan Africa and empowering them to lead climate action.

The Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) is a regional organization working to advance women and girls’ rights in Subsaharan Africa.

Our Analysis: Key Climate Change Challenges

RFLD has identified the following as the main challenges facing women in Subsaharan Africa due to climate change:

Food Security and Agriculture

Women in Subsaharan Africa play a critical role in agriculture. Climate-related factors like droughts, unpredictable rainfall, and soil degradation disproportionately affect female farmers, limiting their access to resources and ability to maintain food security.

Water and Sanitation

Women in Subsaharan Africa are primarily responsible for fetching water. Changing rainfall patterns, water scarcity, and contamination force women to travel longer distances, risking their safety and health, and reducing time for education or income generation.

Health and Well-being

Climate change impacts women's health. Extreme weather events like heat waves and floods increase risks of heat-related illnesses, waterborne diseases, and malnutrition. Pregnant women and caregivers are particularly vulnerable.

Access to Energy and Cooking

Women in Subsaharan Africa often rely on traditional biomass fuels, contributing to deforestation and air pollution. Promoting clean and efficient cooking technologies and sustainable energy sources can mitigate these problems and empower women.

Women’s Participation and Decision-Making

Women face social, cultural, and economic barriers limiting their participation in climate change adaptation and mitigation decisions. Including their perspectives, knowledge, and leadership in policies and programs is essential to address their unique needs.

Our Solutions: Empowering Women for Climate Action

RFLD has been working on climate change for many years, developing innovative solutions to address the challenges facing women in Subsaharan Africa.

Strengthening Women’s Capacity and Knowledge

  • RFLD provides training and education to women in climate-smart agriculture, water management, and sustainable energy practices.
  • This helps women to adapt to climate change and contribute to sustainable development.

Promoting Women’s Leadership and Participation

  • RFLD works to increase women’s participation in decision-making at community, national, and regional levels.
  • This ensures that women’s perspectives and needs are taken into account in climate change policies and programs.

Improving Access to Clean Energy and Cooking Solutions

  • RFLD works to expand access to clean and affordable energy sources and promote clean cooking technologies.
  • This helps to reduce women’s exposure to indoor air pollution and contributes to sustainable development.

Strengthening Health Systems and Services

  • RFLD works to improve health infrastructure, access to healthcare, and maternal and child health programs.
  • This helps to mitigate the health risks associated with climate change, particularly for women and vulnerable populations.

The Importance of Gender-Responsive Climate Change Policies

RFLD believes that it is essential to take into account the intersection between gender and other social, economic, and cultural factors when developing climate change strategies and policies. This is because women are disproportionately affected by climate change, and they have different needs and priorities than men.

Building Women’s Resilience

  • RFLD’s work on capacity building, leadership, and access to resources helps women to build resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Promoting Gender Equality

  • RFLD’s work on women’s participation and health helps to promote gender equality and ensure that women’s voices are heard in climate change decision-making.

Building Sustainable Communities

  • RFLD’s work on agriculture, water management, and energy helps to build sustainable communities that are resilient to climate change.
