Gambia’s FGM Vote: A Betrayal of Women and Girls

A Call to Conscience: Protecting Gambia’s Girls from Female Genital Mutilation

The Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) stands at a crossroads with The Gambia. A nation poised to make a decision that will reverberate not just within its borders, but across the continent and beyond. The Gambian parliament contemplates a vote to overturn the ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a practice that has inflicted pain and suffering on countless girls and women for generations. We, at RFLD, urge President Adama Barrow and all Members of Parliament to stand resolute against this dangerous proposition. Revoking the ban would be a colossal regression, a betrayal of the progress made, and a threat to the health and fundamental rights of Gambian girls.

A Brutal Tradition, Devastating Consequences

FGM is not a mere cultural quirk; it is a brutal act that inflicts lasting physical and psychological trauma. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines FGM as “all procedures involving partial or complete removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.” These procedures, often performed in unhygienic conditions without anesthesia, can lead to a cascade of health complications, including:

  • Severe pain and bleeding
  • Increased risk of infection, including HIV and Hepatitis B
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Complications during childbirth
  • Psychological trauma, depression, and anxiety

The justifications often cited for FGM – social pressure, cultural preservation, and misguided beliefs about female sexuality – pale in comparison to the devastating consequences it inflicts. It is a violation of a girl’s bodily autonomy, robbing her of the right to make decisions about her own body and health.

Beyond Culture: A Fight for Human Rights

Proponents of repealing the ban often frame it as an attack on cultural and religious traditions. However, this narrative is misleading. Culture is not static; it evolves with time. Harmful practices, like FGM, have no place in a society that values human rights and equality. The right to health, enshrined in international law, supersedes cultural justifications for practices that cause demonstrable harm.

Furthermore, arguments about religion are equally specious. Major Islamic scholars have condemned FGM, clarifying that it has no basis in Islamic scripture. The Gambia’s decision should not be based on misinterpretations of religion, but on the well-being of its citizens.

A Slippery Slope: Global Repercussions

The potential repeal of the FGM ban in The Gambia sends a dangerous message, not just domestically, but internationally. Other countries grappling with FGM might see this as an opportunity to dismantle their own safeguards, putting millions more girls at risk. The Gambia has an opportunity to be a leader – a nation that prioritizes the health and rights of its girls. By upholding the ban, it can inspire others to follow suit.

The Power of Progress: Investing in Girls

Ending FGM is not just about protecting girls from physical harm; it is about investing in their futures. Studies have shown that girls who undergo FGM are less likely to attend school, achieve economic independence, and participate fully in society. By eliminating this harmful practice, The Gambia can empower its girls to reach their full potential, contributing to a more prosperous and equitable nation.

A Call to Action: A United Front for Gambian Girls

The RFLD stands in solidarity with Gambian women’s rights organizations, healthcare professionals, and all those who advocate for the safety and well-being of girls. We urge President Barrow and Members of Parliament to:

  • Uphold the existing ban on FGM.
  • Increase public education campaigns to dispel myths surrounding FGM and empower communities to abandon the practice.
  • Invest in healthcare services to address the physical and psychological needs of women and girls who have undergone FGM.
  • Support alternative rites of passage that celebrate girls’ entry into womanhood without inflicting physical harm.

The world is watching. The Gambia has a critical decision to make. Let it choose the path of progress. Let it choose to protect its girls. Let The Gambia be a beacon of hope for a future where all girls, regardless of background, can live healthy, safe, and empowered lives.

Together, we can end FGM. Together, we can create a brighter future for Gambian girls.

RFLD calls upon all Gambians to stand together and raise their voices against the repeal of the FGM ban. Let us build a Gambia where the rights and well-being of all girls are paramount.
