Gambia Triumphs: Parliament Upholds Historic Ban on FGM

Africa 4 min read

On July 15, 2024, The Gambia secured a monumental victory for women’s rights and girls’ well-being as its parliament decisively rejected a bill aiming to overturn the nation’s landmark ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). This triumph reverberates not only within Gambia’s borders but across the globe, affirming the unwavering commitment to protecting girls from this harmful practice.

A Victory for Women and Girls

The proposed bill, had it succeeded, would have made The Gambia the first nation worldwide to re-legalize FGM after criminalizing it, a chilling prospect that was met with fierce opposition from women’s rights organizations, healthcare professionals, and international activists. The parliament’s resolute stance against this regression is a testament to the growing recognition of FGM as a violation of human rights and a public health crisis.

In The Gambia, FGM has been a pervasive issue, with 73% of women aged 15-49 having undergone the procedure as of 2020. Despite the existing ban, FGM continues to be practiced in certain regions, highlighting the urgent need for sustained education and enforcement efforts.

The Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) Stands with Gambian Girls

The RFLD has been at the forefront of advocating for the protection of Gambian girls from FGM. As early as March 18, 2024, our organization issued a poignant article titled “Gambia’s FGM Vote: A Betrayal of Women and Girls,” highlighting the potential consequences of overturning the ban. This advocacy, along with collaborative efforts from sister organizations, played a pivotal role in mobilizing support and raising awareness about the dangers of FGM.

“The Gambia’s decision to uphold its ban on female genital mutilation (FGM) is a victory for women’s rights and girls’ well-being. FGM is a harmful practice that has no place in our society. We urge all countries to follow The Gambia’s lead and ban this harmful practice once and for all”. Agueh Dossi Sekonnou Gloria, President of RFLD

Call to Action: A United Front for Gambian Girls

The RFLD, along with other organizations, urges President Barrow and Members of Parliament to build upon this momentum and take further actions to safeguard girls from FGM. This includes:

  • Upholding and enforcing the existing ban on FGM: Ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable and that communities understand the legal consequences of engaging in this harmful practice.
  • Increasing public education campaigns: Dispelling myths and misconceptions surrounding FGM, empowering communities to abandon the practice, and promoting alternative rites of passage that celebrate girls’ entry into womanhood without inflicting harm.
  • Investing in healthcare services: Addressing the physical and psychological needs of women and girls who have undergone FGM, providing comprehensive medical care and counseling to support their healing and recovery.
  • Supporting alternative rites of passage: Creating safe and empowering spaces for girls to celebrate their transition into adulthood, fostering a sense of community and belonging without the need for harmful practices.

Gambia’s Victory

The Gambia’s resounding rejection of the bill to repeal the FGM ban is a beacon of hope for girls and women across the continent and beyond. It sends a powerful message that FGM is not a cultural tradition to be upheld, but a human rights violation to be eradicated. By protecting girls from this harmful practice, The Gambia paves the way for a brighter future, where every girl can grow up healthy, empowered, and free from the physical and psychological scars of FGM.

This victory is a testament to the unwavering determination of advocates, organizations, and lawmakers who have tirelessly worked to protect the rights and well-being of Gambian girls. It is a reminder that progress is possible, even in the face of deeply entrenched cultural practices. The Gambia’s triumph serves as an inspiration for other nations grappling with FGM, demonstrating that through collective action, education, and unwavering commitment, it is possible to break the cycle of violence and create a world where every girl can thrive.
