From Injustice to Empowerment: Women Leaders Network for Development (RFLD) Message for World Social Justice Day

On this World Social Justice Day, the Women Leaders Network for Development (Rfld) stands with the millions of women and girls in Sub-Saharan Africa who face daily injustices. From economic disparity and gender-based violence to harmful practices and sexual exploitation, their struggles demand our unwavering attention and action.

Economic Disparity: The vast majority of women in Sub-Saharan Africa are relegated to informal economies, with limited access to land, credit, and education. This economic exclusion perpetuates poverty, vulnerability, and dependence, hindering their ability to contribute fully to society and their own well-being.

Gender-Based Violence (GBV): The reality of GBV in Sub-Saharan Africa is alarming. From intimate partner violence to sexual harassment and female genital mutilation, women and girls are subjected to physical, emotional, and psychological harm at staggering rates. This violence not only violates their fundamental rights but also impedes their development and participation in society.

Harmful Practices: Traditional practices like child marriage and early pregnancy rob girls of their childhood, education, and health opportunities. These harmful customs restrict their agency and perpetuate cycles of poverty and inequality.

Sexual Violence: The use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, conflict, and social control is a devastating reality for many women and girls in Sub-Saharan Africa. This trauma leaves lasting physical and psychological scars, impacting their lives and communities for generations.

Rfld’s Call to Action:

As women leaders, we cannot stand idly by in the face of these injustices. We must:

  • Amplify the voices of women and girls: We must create platforms where they can share their experiences and advocate for change.
  • Challenge discriminatory norms and practices: We must work to dismantle the systems and structures that perpetuate inequality and marginalization.
  • Invest in women’s economic empowerment: We must support initiatives that provide access to education, finance, and skills development.
  • Demand accountability for GBV: We must work with governments and communities to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure access to justice and support for survivors.
  • Promote positive social change: We must work to build a society where all women and girls can live free from fear, violence, and discrimination.

Together, we can create a Sub-Saharan Africa where women and girls are empowered to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Let this World Social Justice Day be a turning point. Let us move from awareness to action, and build a future where justice prevails for all.
