The Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) is mobilizing African civil society on the issue of freedom of association and assembly. It organized a workshop on the subject from October 3 to 5 in Accra, Ghana.

The meeting, which was attended by 25 NGO representatives, was an opportunity to provide them with greater access to information enabling them to understand, demand and exercise their rights. It also enabled participants to engage more directly with decision-makers and institutions at all levels to protect human rights and democratic and media freedoms.

“With regard to the rights of minority groups, there has been increased engagement among Human Rights Defenders and journalists with other relevant actors (constituent groups) that manifests itself in learning, exchange and collective/solidarity actions. They also called for greater access to support and resources to help them improve the quality and sustainability of their work”, says Dossi Sekonnou Gloria AGUEH, President of the RFLD.

This workshop is organized within the framework of the Consortium for the Promotion of Human Rights, Civil Liberties and Media Development (CHARM) in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Consortium works collectively to develop civil society, human rights defenders, independent media and journalists in the region, supporting actions to protect and extend the freedoms to express oneself, organize and act.

The RFLD is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

The RFLD is committed to the promotion of civic space, democracy and human rights. The network has undertaken workshops, advocacy, dialogues, research and action-oriented publications on human rights and democracy issues in Africa, and has strengthened the capacity of other African organizations to monitor and protect human rights in Africa.
