Every year on October 11, the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl, an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of girls’ rights and highlight the challenges they face worldwide. This year, we turn our attention to West and Central Africa to highlight the vital work done by the Réseau des Femmes Leader pour le Développement (RFLD) in protecting girls’ sexual and reproductive rights in these regions.

West and Central Africa, like many other regions of the world, faces major challenges when it comes to girls’ sexual and reproductive rights. RFLD research has highlighted issues such as early marriage, teenage pregnancy, female genital mutilation and limited access to sex education and reproductive health services as major obstacles to girls’ well-being and autonomy.

RFLD dedicated to promoting the rights of women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa, plays a crucial role in combating these challenges.

Comprehensive and accessible sex education:

Sex education is a fundamental pillar in enabling girls to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. RFLD works in partnership with schools, communities and local authorities to set up comprehensive and accessible sex education programs. These programs aim to provide accurate, age-appropriate information on sexual health, contraception, reproductive rights and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

Access to reproductive health care:

Access to quality reproductive health services is essential for girls. RFLD works with local health facilities to ensure that girls have access to healthcare tailored to their needs, including contraception, prenatal care and family planning. They also work to raise community awareness of the importance of these services.

Combating early marriage and female genital mutilation:

Harmful practices such as early marriage and female genital mutilation are unfortunately still widespread in some parts of sub-Saharan Africa. The RFLD leads awareness-raising campaigns to put an end to these practices, and advocates stricter laws to protect girls. The organization also works to empower girls so that they can better resist these social and family pressures.

Advocacy and economic empowerment:

RFLD is not only active in the field, but also plays a key role in advocating for policies and laws that protect girls’ sexual and reproductive rights. In addition, the organization supports the economic empowerment of girls and women, as this strengthens their ability to make informed decisions about their health and their lives.

On this International Day of the Girl, we are proud of the work carried out by the Réseau des Femmes Leader pour le Développement (RFLD) in sub-Saharan Africa. Our unwavering commitment to protecting girls’ sexual and reproductive rights is helping to create a better, more equal future for all girls in the region. The RFLD reminds us that girls’ autonomy and well-being are essential to building more just and equitable societies.
