The World Bank Group (WBG) and Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD), a leading network of women leaders in sub-Saharan Africa, joined forces in advancing gender equality and empowering women across the region.

On October 5th, 2023, the WBG held a formal consultation with RFLD representatives to gather insights and inform the development of its proposed 2024-2030 Gender Strategy. The discussion highlighted a remarkable alignment between RFLD’s strategic plan and the WBG’s proposed objectives.

Key areas of alignment include:

  • Ending gender-based violence (GBV): Both RFLD’s work on women’s rights and health and the WBG’s focus on ending GBV and building human capital demonstrate a shared commitment to creating a safer and healthier future for all.
  • Empowering women leaders: RFLD’s dedication to promoting civil liberties and democratic participation aligns perfectly with the WBG’s focus on women’s leadership and collective action.
  • Championing economic justice: RFLD’s advocacy for women’s economic opportunities complements the WBG’s recognition of gender equality as a critical driver for sustainable development and a just transition.
  • Strengthening collaboration: RFLD’s extensive network and deep understanding of local contexts, coupled with the WBG’s resources and expertise, create an unparalleled force for positive change through country engagement and participatory governance.

RFLD’s impactful projects on the ground further showcase the potential of this collaboration:

  • Water justice: RFLD recognizes unequal water distribution as a source of violence against women and works tirelessly to ensure access to water as a pathway to peace and improved healthcare.
  • Combating GBV: Through initiatives like their recent report on “Addressing the Intersection of VAWG, SRH, and Disability in West Africa,” RFLD empowers women with knowledge and advocates for legal enforcement to combat GBV.
  • Advancing women’s rights: RFLD collaborates with parliamentarians and government officials to shape policies that enhance women’s economic opportunities and legal framework.

The WBG and RFLD are committed to leveraging their combined strengths to:

  • Develop and implement impactful programs that address the specific needs of women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Support and empower women leaders in their pursuit of equal rights and opportunities.
  • Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing between governments, civil society organizations, and communities.
  • Hold ourselves accountable for measurable progress towards gender equality.

This collaboration marks a significant step forward in the fight for a more equitable and prosperous Africa. By working together, the WBG and RFLD can empower women and girls to lead the way towards a brighter future for all.
