Operating in the Sahel. In Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, RFLD works through local member organisations without direct branding, puts local leadership ahead of external visibility and designs convenings with partner security first. RFLD will pause or withdraw where partner safety cannot be assured.

Context and safeguards

Why the initiative exists and how it protects people

The context

Several countries in the area are going through military transitions, restrictions on civic association and rising threats against journalists and defenders. Regional resources circulate mainly in English, so francophone organisations reach ACHPR and UN mechanisms late.

Safeguarding and ethics

A survivor-centred approach to data, protection modules in every training, listening spaces during convenings and written consent for the use of images collected since December 2025.

Data protection

Nominal participant lists are reserved for reporting to GIZ and its funder. Any wider circulation uses a pseudonymised version that keeps countries and numbers and removes names and organisations.
