New Policy Brief: Empowering Young Women Human Rights Defenders in West Africa and the Sahel

The policy brief titled “Empowering Young Women Human Rights Defenders in West Africa and the Sahel: Strengthening Youth-Led Civic Movements,” authored by Justice Alor from RFLD Ghana, was released in March 2026. Emphasizing their grassroots efforts and the risks they face, the brief provides evidence-based analysis with recommendations for reinforcing legal protections and resources for these defenders. RFLD Assumes the Presidency of the GIZ Africa SEA-T Advisory Council for 2026 – A Historic Milestone for Francophone African Feminism

The Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) has been appointed to lead the SEA-T Advisory Council in 2026, marking a pivotal development in the governance of African feminist organizations. Founded in 2012, RFLD reaches over 2.9 million women and girls yearly and seeks to address systemic funding challenges that predominantly affect Francophone feminist groups. The SEA-T program aims to empower civil society and promote gender equality across Africa through a collaborative model. RFLD’s presidency will focus on closing funding gaps, enhancing protections for women human rights defenders, generating crucial data, amplifying marginalized voices, and fostering collective advocacy efforts.

June 12-14, 2026: RFLD hosts West Africa Feminist Data Summit in Accra, Ghana – Meet the Operating System That African Feminism Runs On

RFLD is an African-led initiative that provides vital data infrastructure to support over 450 organizations across 55 countries in their fight for women’s rights. It offers legislative tracking, digital safety monitoring, and emergency protection systems to empower grassroots advocates and ensure effective policy reforms. The West Africa Feminist Data Summit will unite more than 200 activists, researchers, and technologists to enhance gender justice through data-driven strategies. Participants will engage in workshops, master advocacy tools, and gain insights to influence legislation. The data center consolidates real-time information essential for advocacy efforts, ensuring a coordinated approach to tackling gender-based issues in Africa.
