Navigating Challenges: The Path to Ending Violence Against Women and Girls in Africa

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) remains a critical issue in the Sahel, West, and Central Africa, marked by various forms such as intimate partner violence and harmful practices like FGM. Cultural norms perpetuate VAWG, necessitating male involvement in prevention. While treaties like the AUCEVAWG provide a framework for action, gaps in addressing intersectionality and resource limitations hinder progress. Collective action from governments and NGOs like the RFLD is essential for creating a safer environment and enabling women’s participation in society.

These include the persistence of discriminatory cultural and social customs, tolerance of violence against women and weak law enforcement. To meet these challenges, a multidimensional approach is required. This involves deconstructing the patriarchal system, challenging discriminatory social norms and empowering women economically. Proposed solutions include awareness-raising and education to transform gender norms, development of protective laws and policies, empowerment of women and girls, access to support services and active community participation.
