As part of our ongoing commitment to justice and equality, we are pleased to share our report titled “Towards Justice and Healing,” published in June 2024 by the Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD). This comprehensive 254-page document sheds light on the situation of women victims of human rights violations in West Africa. As we engage in the 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence, this report serves as an essential tool for raising awareness and mobilizing key stakeholders around this urgent issue.

The report provides an in-depth exploration of the challenges faced by women and girls in 15 countries across the region while highlighting progress made in terms of justice and accountability. Through rigorous analysis, we document a wide range of violence against women, including domestic violence, sexual assault, and harmful practices such as female genital mutilation. Each chapter presents detailed case studies that illustrate the devastating impacts of these violations on the lives of victims. These poignant narratives testify to the suffering endured by women and the obstacles they encounter in their pursuit of justice and reparation.

“Towards Justice and Healing” does not merely recount stories of pain and suffering; it also offers concrete recommendations aimed at improving the situation of women in West Africa. The report calls for strengthening justice and accountability systems, preventing human rights violations, protecting and supporting female victims, and promoting healing and the rebuilding of lives. These recommendations are vital not only for human rights defenders and governmental actors but also serve as a guiding framework for international organizations and engaged citizens in the fight against violence toward women.

Towards Justice and Healing: A Powerful Report on Women’s Human Rights in West Africa

The significance of this report lies in its potential to catalyze meaningful change. By calling for urgent and concerted action, “Towards Justice and Healing” encourages all societal actors to mobilize against violence toward women and to build a society where the rights of all women are respected and protected. The findings of our research underscore the necessity of a holistic approach that integrates both legislative reforms and community initiatives to address the root causes of gender inequality and violence.

The Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) is a women-led organization dedicated to ending discrimination and violence against women and girls while promoting gender equality and human rights in Sub-Saharan Africa. The publication of “Towards Justice and Healing” reflects our determination to break the silence surrounding violence against women and contribute to the creation of a region where women can live free from violence and discrimination. During this 16 Days of Activism period, we invite you to read the report and join us in this crucial struggle.

We firmly believe that awareness and education are powerful tools for changing mindsets and mobilizing communities. By sharing the findings of this report, we hope to inspire concrete actions and commitments from all concerned stakeholders. Whether through discussions, workshops, or awareness campaigns, every effort counts in our quest for gender equality and justice for women in West Africa. Together, we can build a future where every woman and girl can live without fear, in dignity and respect.
