The current state of democracy in West Africa is a source of growing alarm. In recent years, the region has witnessed a series of coups, power grabs, and democratic backsliding that have threatened to undermine the hard-won gains made in recent decades. These developments have not only jeopardized the stability and progress of the region but also raised concerns about the future of democracy in West Africa.

As a Steering Committee Member of the West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS), Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) is currently in Accra, Ghana, participating in the 5th Steering Committee Meeting. The organization mobilizes, coordinates, and leverages the collective power of civil society and other pro-democracy actors to advance, defend, and reinvigorate democracy and promote democratic norms and reforms in the sub-region.

The 5th Steering Committee Meeting is taking place at a critical juncture for democracy in West Africa. The recent coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea-Bissau, as well as the ongoing political instability in other countries, underscore the urgent need for robust democratic institutions and inclusive political processes. These developments highlight the importance of WADEMOS’s work in strengthening civil society and promoting democratic values in the region.

During the meeting, WADEMOS representatives discuss strategic priorities and address the pressing challenges facing democracy in West Africa. They also focus on how WADEMOS can amplify the voices of women, youth, disability groups, local organizations and advocate for their full participation in the political decision-making processes.

RFLD, as a member of WADEMOS, is committed to working with other CSOs and pro-democracy actors to strengthen women’s leadership and promote democratic participation in West Africa. Our organization believes that women’s voices are essential for building sustainable and equitable democracies in the region.

In the face of the current challenges, WADEMOS and its partners are committed to working tirelessly to promote democracy and democratic values in West Africa. The organization’s efforts are crucial for ensuring that the region can continue to move towards a future of peace, prosperity, and inclusive governance.
