Emerging Trends : Weaponizing Online Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Against Feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders in Francophone Africa

The article, authored by Mrs. Folashade Otilorin and Mrs. Colecte Kpossou, examines the dual nature of the digital age, revealing significant threats to women, especially feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs). It highlights the alarming rise of Online Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (OSEA) in Francophone Africa as a deliberate tactic to silence feminist advocacy. The research underscores systemic challenges like patriarchal norms, economic disparities, and inadequate legal responses, which exacerbate vulnerabilities. The piece advocates for a comprehensive Afrofeminist framework emphasizing legal reform, technology accountability, digital literacy, and survivor support, stressing the urgency of collective action to reclaim digital spaces for women’s empowerment and safety.
