Navigating Challenges: The Path to Ending Violence Against Women and Girls in Africa
Violence against women and girls (VAWG) remains a critical issue in the Sahel, West, and Central Africa, marked by various forms such as intimate partner violence and harmful practices like FGM. Efforts to combat VAWG face challenges, including inadequate implementation of legal frameworks, funding constraints, insufficient research, and the impact of conflict. Cultural norms perpetuate VAWG, necessitating male involvement in prevention. While treaties like the AUCEVAWG provide a framework for action, gaps in addressing intersectionality and resource limitations hinder progress. Collective action from governments and NGOs like the RFLD is essential for creating a safer environment and enabling women’s participation in society.
