John GBENAGNON moderates the sub-regional reports at the NGOs Forum

On Thursday 8 October 2026, from 10:40 to 12:10, the first working session of the Forum on the Participation of NGOs in the 89th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights gives the floor to the sub-regional focal points. Each one presents an overview and update on the situation of human rights and democracy in their part of the continent.

The session is moderated by John GBENAGNON, Director of Strategy and Development and Head of the RFLD delegation. RFLD is a partner of the Forum, convened by the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS).

The focal points

  • Central Africa: Marcel Mani Epee
  • Eastern Africa: Walda Keza Shaka
  • Northern Africa: Naji Moulay Lahsen
  • Western Africa: Mélanie Sonhaye Kombate
  • Southern Africa: Cathy Elando Kodiemoka
  • Lusophone network: Emilio José Manuel (recorded contribution)

Why this session matters

The reports of the focal points set the tone for the three days of the Forum. They bring together what civil society has documented since the last session, from attacks on defenders to restrictions on civic space and the impact of conflicts and unconstitutional changes of government. Their findings feed the resolutions and recommendations that the Forum adopts on 10 October and presents to the African Commission.

Thursday 8 October 2026, 10:40 to 12:10, Pullman Dakar Teranga. Times follow the revised agenda shared by ACDHRS on 5 October 2026. Media enquiries: communications.info@rflgd.org.
