African Human Rights Advocacy Forges Ahead – RFLD Facilitates ACHPR NGOs Forum Steering Committee in Laying 2026-2031 Strategic Groundwork

The ACHPR NGOs Forum Steering Committee Meeting, conducted on July 25-26, 2025, in Banjul, The Gambia, aimed to refine human rights advocacy in Africa. Hosted by ACDHRS and led by Mrs. Hannah Forster, it gathered diverse regional representatives who engaged in strategic planning for the ACHPR’s objectives for 2026-2031. Key goals include enhancing the human rights framework, encouraging CSO engagement, and advocating for underrepresented groups. Discussions highlighted essential challenges like extremism and the need for improved communication, capacity building, and resource mobilization. This meeting set the stage for vital advancements in human rights initiatives across the continent.

Spotlighting Women’s Leadership for Political Equality in Benin: RFLD Grant Empowers REFELA

Benin is grappling with the underrepresentation of women in local political positions. In response, REFELA-Benin, supported by a grant from RFLD, has initiated a documentary to highlight the contributions of women leaders at the local level. In 2020, only 81 women were elected out of 1,815 councilors, with minimal representation in key positions, such as mayors and deputy mayors. The documentary aims to showcase successful female politicians, inspire future leaders, and encourage broader female political participation by raising awareness and challenging gender stereotypes. REFELA-Benin and RFLD are dedicated to women’s empowerment and long-term representation in local politics.

Aid to women’s organisations is falling. RFLD moves funding fast to women-led organisations and defenders, in French and English, through a network of 1,143 member organisations in more than 35 African countries.L’aide aux organisations de femmes recule. Le RFLD achemine vite les financements vers les organisations de femmes et les défenseures, en français et en anglais, grâce à un réseau de 1 143 organisations membres dans plus de 35 pays africains.

RFLD currently serves as Co-Chair of the SEA-T Programme Advisory Council, mandated to ensure the programme’s direction, priorities, and resources are meaningfully aligned with the visions of African women-led civil society. The SEA-T Programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.Le RFLD assure actuellement la coprésidence du Conseil consultatif du programme SEA-T, chargé de veiller à ce que l’orientation, les priorités et les ressources du programme soient réellement alignées sur les visions de la société civile africaine portée par les femmes.
