Spotlighting Women’s Leadership for Political Equality in Benin: RFLD Grant Empowers REFELA

Benin is grappling with the underrepresentation of women in local political positions. In response, REFELA-Benin, supported by a grant from RFLD, has initiated a documentary to highlight the contributions of women leaders at the local level. In 2020, only 81 women were elected out of 1,815 councilors, with minimal representation in key positions, such as mayors and deputy mayors. The documentary aims to showcase successful female politicians, inspire future leaders, and encourage broader female political participation by raising awareness and challenging gender stereotypes. REFELA-Benin and RFLD are dedicated to women’s empowerment and long-term representation in local politics.

Unfollowing Misogyny: A Conversation on Digital Technology and Violence Against Women and Girls in West and Central Africa

The digital landscape in West and Central Africa is transforming social interactions through increased internet access and mobile usage, empowering women and marginalized communities. However, these platforms can also foster misogyny and online harassment, particularly via social media. Toxic masculinity drives violence against women and girls (VAWG), necessitating a multi-faceted approach to combat it, including educational initiatives for young men. Digital literacy programs are essential to empower women, enabling them to navigate online spaces safely. Collaborative efforts among stakeholders, effective policies, and community engagement are crucial for creating safer digital environments that promote gender equality and challenge harmful stereotypes.

Responding to RFLD USAID Funding Terminations and the Need for Donor Advised Fund to support our work in the Sahel, West, Central, and Southern Africa

The Réseau des Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD) has suffered significant setbacks due to the cessation of funding from U.S. sources, including USAID. This freeze has led to the termination of key projects aimed at improving governance and addressing urgent issues faced by women and girls in West and Central Africa. Critical initiatives on sexual health education, water sanitation, and peacebuilding efforts are at risk, jeopardizing support for vulnerable groups. RFLD seeks partnerships and donations to reinstate these programs, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention to address gender-based violence, limited access to education, and healthcare inequalities for women in the region.
