Dear Allies,
Greetings from Nairobi, Kenya!
This week, our organization, RFLD, is proudly taking part in the FEMNET General Assembly here in Nairobi to elect the FEMNET New Board. As we gather in this vibrant city, the birthplace of the powerful leader and environmental champion, Wangari Maathai, we are reminded of the profound strength and resilience that emanates from this land.
In the spirit of this inspiring atmosphere, we are honored to share with you a special poem that encapsulates the essence of our movement: “Heritage and Horizons: The Strength of African Feminism for Participation and Liberation.” We hope it resonates with you as deeply as it does with us.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
In solidarity,
The RFLD Team
POEM
Our movement is not reactive, a simple echo of the past, It breathes, it forges the future, an enlightened path is cast. No trembling hand that yields, nor hasty, fearful flight, But a wisdom deep and lasting, stirring night into bright light. We rise not just in anger, though fervor fuels our flame, But with a verdant vision, whispering a brand new name.
Regenerative, is our pulse, a rhythmic, steady beat, Where every loss breeds courage, and every bitter, turns sweet. For the spirit of the land, ancient, profound, and ever wise, Calls for Afrofeminist unity, beneath ancestral skies. A symbol of resilience, woven through time’s vast loom, Chasing shadows, clearing paths, banishing every gloom.
The voice of our feminist leadership, rises, clear and strong, A wave of liberation that Africa’s winds prolong. Every woman, every girl, a star, a sun that gleams, Reclaiming her innate power, dispelling ancient dreams. No more imposed silence, no more whispers in the shade, But fervent advocacy, making darkness recede. Of chains that would bind us, of lies that would enslave, Our gains are the testament, freedom’s seeds behave.
Yet, in this year, a stark reality we face, No economy grants full rights, a legal, gendered space. A mere sixty-four percent of rights that men command, Far from what we once believed, across this wounded land. This inequality kills, a truth we must embrace, Sexist laws, old stereotypes, leave economic, violent traces. To stop this tragic toll, to heal the deepest wound, All discriminatory laws must swiftly be unmoored.
Daughters, sisters, elders, working hands in hand, A strong and flowing river, across the sun-kissed sand. The elder, with her wisdom, a guardian of ancient lore, Recalls the paths less traveled, the struggles gone before. Her eyes, the maps of history, her voice, a gentle guide, Igniting fires in the young ones, deep within their pride. The sister, strong beside her, shoulders broad and true, Bearing burdens, sharing laughter, seeing visions through.
Her energy is a dynamo, her purpose clear and bold, A story in the making, more precious far than gold. The daughter, with her future, eyes gleaming, bright and keen, Absorbing every lesson, a blossoming, vibrant queen. Her spirit unencumbered, yet rooted in the past, Ready to shape tomorrow, a freedom built to last. This intergenerational dance, a rhythm strong and pure, Ensures our sacred mission, forever will endure. For strength is found in joining, voices in a mighty choir, Igniting revolution, with unextinguished fire.
We celebrate 30 years of Beijing, a luminous milestone, That sets a comprehensive framework, now widely known. Poverty, education, health, violence, and participation’s plea, Twelve critical areas outlined, for all humanity to see. To decolonize our feminism, a bold commitment known, Reviewing progress since ninety-five, seeds of action sown. Our political power, we co-inspire and reclaim it, Not merely reacting, but building the future, lit. The future is no distant promise, the future is now, vibrant and keen, In every action we undertake, every step that’s seen. Co-conspire in solidarity, our hearts beating as one, Crafting audacious strategies, until the battle’s won.
For diverse movements are key to change, a truth we hold so dear, People coming together, banishing every fear. In Africa, vast networks rise, for Maputo Protocol’s might, The most progressive instrument, for women and girls’ true rights. Forty-three states have ratified, as of September twenty-two, Guaranteeing political voice, and reproductive health for you.
Feminist movements for change, are vital to shape the law, For women and for girls, without a single flaw. More support for coalitions, faith-based and human rights, To end discrimination, and win our family fights. The Beijing+30 Action Agenda, six key points to heed, Eradicating poverty, and planting freedom’s seed. Increased voice and agency, for women to be free, Ensuring safety, security, for all humanity to see. This anniversary calls us to reconnect, regenerate our might, To mobilize public support, and turn the darkness into light.
To lift others, those left on the fringe, those in despair, Sharing the same vision, through ages, beyond compare. For our movement is not reactive, to the echo of a fight, It is a river that never stops, a perpetual step in light. The subtle digital chains, the challenges that we face, Shall not extinguish the flame, nor alter our true pace. The media’s voice muted, journalists under threat, But we, with agile fingers, ensure the truth is met. We learn the cyber pathways, the codes that protect our own, Against the authoritarian tide, our voices with strength are known. We follow the new laws, the statutes that seek to bind, With legal lens and passion, leaving no one behind.
We build secure networks, for those who dare to speak, For every woman warrior, for every spirit meek. From Sahel’s arid beauty, to Ghana’s coastal grace, We weave a web of sisterhood, across this sacred space. For marginalized voices rising, in unison and bold, Demanding recognition, a future to unfold. Our movement is not reactive, simply to block and hold, But regenerative in its essence, stories to be told. We plant the seeds of justice, where barren lands once lay, Nourishing growth and progress, day by hopeful day.
We are the living forest, continually renewed, Each fallen leaf a lesson, each victory imbued. The past informs our present, the present shapes our future’s gleam, A vibrant, ever-flowing, regenerative dream. We build on every triumph, learn from every fall, Responding with creation, answering freedom’s call. No isolated battles, but a grand, harmonious whole, Uniting every spirit, reaching for every soul.
For as the rivers flow onward, carving paths anew, So too our feminist movement, resilient, strong, and true. It breathes ancestral wisdom, embraces modern art, A boundless, living spirit, beating in every heart. The daughters of tomorrow, with eyes so bright and clear, Will walk upon the pathways we’ve carefully paved here. They’ll find the seeds we’ve planted, blossoming in their time, A legacy of freedom, eternal and sublime.
Our fight is not an ending, but a cycle ever grand, Regenerative, ever-flowing, across this blessed land. For the spirit of the land calls, a timeless, sacred plea, For Afrofeminist unity, for all humanity, to be.
